We're finally in Taiwan!
At long last, we've made it to Taichung, Taiwan! We had a great trip over. It started at 4:00 am on Friday, December 18, when we arose. With help from Mary and Matthew, we were on the road by 5:00 or so. Son John drove us to the airport. We appreciate their help so much! Here we are in Salt Lake City:
We flew to San Francisco, where we changed to a flight to Taipei, Taiwan. It was a long flight, but with he help of free on-board movies and refreshments, the time went by pretty quickly. A short 14 hours or so later, we landed at Taoyuan International Airport.
After LOTS of quarantine paperwork, we were met by Stanley Yeh, a young Church employee, who helped us get government-approved (Covid compliant) transportation to Taichung, over an hour away. After our bags (and us!) were sprayed down with disinfectant, we began the last leg of our journey. Aside from a long delay caused by a car crash, we arrived without incident. We were dropped at our apartment building and, after some confusion about where our apartment actually was, we hauled our bags in and collapsed. It had been a 25 hour day, and we were exhaused!
We lost Saturday due to the International Date Line, so the next day was Sunday. We unpacked and enjoyed our first day in the mission field! We have to stay inside our apartment for 14 days. Each day, we get several calls from various police or other government agencies asking about our health and reminding us to stay inside our apartment. Which we do, scrupulously. The mission sisters stocked our apartment with a good selection of food, and it's really quite comfortable. We have a tiny balcony in our 8th floor apartment, which gives us a nice view of... the neighboring apartment buildings, mostly.
Here's a picture of Sister Wells, hard at work in our apartment Monday morning:
It's now Tuesday, and we had nice online chats with several of our children and their families. Paul's family did a nativity play for FHE (on our Tuesday morning, it's Monday night in Utah), and we also got to chat with Mary, Matthew and Nelson, and also with Katie! Messenger, Zoom, Marco Polo, etc. are a real blessing for us grandparents!
